Weather or Not

Ten days ago we had flooding in the low places in light jacket weather.  This morning we woke up to 28° and a hard frost that looked like snow.

Whatever the weather, the animals expect to be fed twice a day.  They wait patiently at the gate until we appear.

For the past several weeks Herb has been doing most all of the feeding, but today I joined him with the camera and the four dogs.  (Bonnie and Kara are staying with us while Kara gets over the winter crud.)  Jet was first through the gate into the pasture with the cattle, but like a gentleman, he waited for sister Bonnie.

When Herb dumped the hay over the fence for the cattle, Jet and Bonnie raced over, sure there was something tasty.  Sure enough, Bonnie found a "poopsicle!"

Then Bonnie ran back to Siobhan and me to see if Siobhan had left her any grain.  Dream on, Bonnie!

Royal and Ebby really got into their breakfast.
Shortly after lunch it started to snow and kept on all afternoon.  The cattle hung out at the water cooler in one big mass of furry warmth.

The snow fell in vain for a couple of hours, with nothing to show for all that effort.  Shortly after 4:00 Siobhan gave a loud moo.  There she was, standing at the gate, reminding us that it was time to eat again.  Inside, as soon as I got up Jet twirled in circles, ever excited to go out and feed.  And so we did, all over again, weather or not.

While We Were Away

I left the beginning of May for Texas and didn't get home until after Herb's graduation on the 10th.  It seemed like the farm had "put on the dog" to welcome me back home and celebrate Herb's graduation and Mother's Day all rolled into one.

The Knock-Out rose had knocked itself out putting on a splendid display.  Jet and Bonnie seem to think that the round bench covering the old cistern was put there just for them.

We think Joe Palmer of McKinnley Excavating and his hard-working crew did a fabulous job with our patio!  And now that winter is truly gone, we intend to enjoy it for the rest of the summer, especially with the nice umbrella that Kara got me for Mother's Day . . .

. . . and the tiled dolphin fountain on the back porch that Herb got me.  The puppies think it's theirs, too, and they keep splashing the water out!  I'm so glad they're enjoying our back yard!

Pure Joy!

This is another Ketchup Post from March 29 when Jim and Monique brought the grandkids for the afternoon and evening for some Ketchup birthday celebrations.  It was the first time Eden has been here that she could take in everything going on around her, and what caught her attention was Jet and Bonnie.  There's just something about babies and puppies that make a perfect combination!  If anything illustrates Pure Joy, it's Eden's face!

Eden spotted the puppies out in the back yard . . .

. . . so we brought them up on the back porch for a meet-and-greet with her and Mama.
Eden was speechless with surprise and delight.
She looked at each of us there to see if we saw the wonderful, delightful, joy-bringing puppies!  And she brought back to each of us the joy of that lovely combination of baby + puppies.

Pure Joy!

Snowy Day

Lately I've been saying that if it has to be freezing cold, we might as well get some snow out of it.  Well, today we finally did!

Royal is all decked out in red, white and blue.  I wonder what he thinks of our weather here?
Sir Loin is practicing his "I'm too cute to eat" routine and being very successful at it!
Siobhan, Macree and Ebony chose a classic black-and-white theme for their portrait.  (And thanks to Kara for these photos.)
Bonnie and Jet have been going bonkers all day, racing through the snow and barking.  Just because they can.  At least they should sleep well tonight!

They're fascinated with tasting this fluffy white stuff.

It's good to know that needed maintenance has been done and the barns will adequately shelter everyone and everything in them.

Brandy, Angel and Julie have been feeling very frisky today.  You can actually see the soles of Brandy's feet as she kicks her heels into the air.

Angel joins in with a just-one-foot-on-the-ground rear as Brandy runs by.  Although the photos don't show it, it's usually mischievous little Julie that gets things moving.

In the distance, Lookout Mountain is completely obscured by the snowfall.  When it gets like this, sanity rules in our area.  Schools and businesses send everyone home, so Herb's afternoon classes were cancelled.  It took him a long time to get home past all the cars that couldn't navigate the snowy roads, but he finally made it.

I'll be glad to have his help for evening feeding along with his regular hauling of hot water to melt the ice in the pasture tanks.  When everyone's settled for the night, we get to come back to a hot pot of chili that Kara is making, followed by Herb's inspiration of the day--ice cream.  What better way to remind us what a blessing it is to be safe and warm inside on a snowy day.

Christmas Joy

We've been enjoying our Christmas present to ourselves as the Old Year draws to a close.

Herb couldn't wait to try it out, so he fired up the grill as soon as it was done--and after it was too dark to see!

The open fireplace has one grill cut to fit inside it for grilling over charcoal and a larger grill cut to fit over the top, leaving enough room to burn logs underneath for grilling over wood--Herb's favorite way to cook!

Dusty, Anthony and Joe Palmer, the owner of McKinnley Excavating, did a fantastic job, and we're so excited with our new patio.

All that's left to do is to get the stone top to fit over the round bench that covers the old cistern (once the quarry opens again in the New Year.)

As you can see, our Christmas present didn't fit under the tree, but we did have some awfully nice elves to thank for it!

We had another Christmas present, too--a surprise!  And it didn't fit under the tree, either . . .
Katie!
And Cameron!  They drove up from Houston and surprised us for Christmas.  Surprise is the operative word here--if you heard blood-curdling shrieks on Monday evening, Dec. 23, that was me when I saw them following Kara out of the study as we walked in the door after having dinner with friends.

We knew Kara would be with us for Christmas, but she had a nice surprise for us too--a beautiful floral arrangement that she made herself.

On Christmas Day we enjoyed some sun for a change and got photos on the patio.  All our Christmas presents in one place!

Kara decked Bonnie and Jet in their Christmas finery and took pictures of them, too.

We feasted on our first Dexter roast done in the oven instead of the crock pot.  Everyone loved it, although I'll turn it over halfway through, next time.  It didn't have a lot of fat on it so I used some bacon to cover a bare spot, but look at that rich yellow grass-fed fat!

On the 26th, Katie and Cameron treated us to another first--a deep-fried turkey!  They brought the fryer and turkey all the way from Texas.

Here's the bird in the fryer . . .

... and ready to be eaten.  It was delicious!
There was more to come, with a homemade plum pudding flambé.  Well, and a bit of tablecloth flambé, too, but nothing that couldn't be mopped up with a towel--and no harm done to the tablecloth!

There!  Isn't that gorgeous!

Of course the fireplace got put to work again, grilling Dexter burgers.

Sorry, that's mean of me!

Everyone else knew just how to get the most out of the patio while Herb grilled.

Here's the master chef with his wood-grilled burgers!

With all of these wonderful Christmas blessings, as I walked around the quiet house on Christmas Eve taking pictures of the glowing Christmas decorations, our theme verse on the mantel seemed especially timely as a meditation for the New Year.

May 2014 be a year full of blessings for each of you!

We're Thankful

In no particular order through the weekend . . .

Herb & Susan for having kids, grandkids and grand-dogs here for the weekend.

Jim and Monique - for a time to take a break.

Aunt Kara - for getting to play with her niece and nephew, affectionately known as "the Kidlings."
Didi - for hugs from grandkids.
Mimi - ditto.

In fact, he was obviously SO thankful (just look at his face!) that he and Kol deserve two photos!
Eden - for her very first pony ride.

Julie - for being the center of attention.

Susan - for riding partners.
Angel - ditto.
Monique - the first time to ride in a long time.

Jean-Marc - for a chance to hang out with his niece . . .

... and nephew.
Kol - for a chance to play not-too-scary-monster with Uncle Jean-Marc, Aunt Jenny & Aunt Kara.
