More Whining and Dining

Me again, Miss Zephyrius. (That's another one of my nicknames.) Well, believe it or not, everyone finally had enough whining--even Daddy and Mommy. So next we went to a place called Carter Mountain Orchard. It was really neat! It's a 200 acre farm and orchard on top of a mountain, and they grow all kinds of apple trees. You can pick your own apples, but we didn't do that because it was really cold, and besides, they know I don't care much for apples. Kind of hard to eat without hands to hold them . . . Now, if you could pick your own steaks . . . or chicken scraps . . .or horse poop . . . Mommy and Jenny checked out the shops and bought some really good apple cider. Then we took more pictures, of course! There were lots and lots of plumpkins, but none as big as the Great Plumpkin. Then Mommy saw a big old tractor pulling a gigantic wagon, and she got all excited and said, "Let's take a hayride!" So we all got to go--even me! There were some really cute kids there, and they asked Mommy if they could pet me before they did. I thought they were so polite! I love children! Then the hayride started, so everyone had to sit down because it was very bumpy. It was freezing cold for the humans, but not for me. I love the cold! Mommy was very cold, so I sat on her lap and kept her warm. Daddy had gloves, but she didn't, so I let her put her cold hands in my fur. Jean-Marc kept Jenny warm because they haven't been married very long--AND she doesn't have a Sheltie, poor Jenny! When we got on the very tip-top of the mountain, no one cared how cold it was because it was so beautiful watching the sun set over the valley all around us. We could even see all the way to the Blue Ridge Mountains.  The setting sun lit up the bright red apples on the trees, and it made me wish I liked them.

Even though we have done hayrides with the tractor at Leahaven, it was lots more fun when you don't have to worry about licking people to make them feel welcome; you just get to ride and let the wind blow your ears and ruffle your fur! You can see that my humans had lots of fun, too! The reason there isn't a picture of Jenny is because she had lots of fun using Mommy's camera taking pictures of everyone else! :) That was the end of that day except for going home to eat supper. Jenny made lots of delicious meals while we were there, and that night was one of Mommy's favorites called "Posole." She said she found the leak and asked me to put it in: http://www.bonappetit.com/magazine/2008/12/holiday_pork_posole

I didn't know there was a leak. Maybe there was a hole in the pot? I wish I had known because it smelled delicious, and I would have licked it up! Anyway, Mommy is already making this at home, she loved it so much! I hope she'll give me and Hero some . . .

Zephyr, you would be soooo jealous if we had a Sheltie. That why we don't have one.... Yet !

  3. Here's my post about our time with you all:
We had a wonderful time with my parents and their new little daugher, Zeph Zeph. We went to Charlottesville and visited the apple orchard and three different wineries. While our family was here, we feasted on home made beouf bourguignon, Posole, pork in Provencal tomato sauce, winter squash soup, pear-bitter-sweet cake with caramelized butter and a lemon zest pound cake! On their last day, Mom made roast herb chicken with home made German potato dumplings and fresh greens with figs and raspberries, all topped off with fresh bread and brie cheese. What a weekend! So full of tastes, smells, good food, laughter. The prevailing curtain of cold rain just made our inner circle of gaiety all the more warm and cozy! Our fridge and freezer is full of bits of left overs, enough to last us until Thanksgiving.

Now, I'm ready to drop into bed and hibernate all winter, or at least until Thanksgiving and Christmas, when more yummy food graces out table!!

  8. How could Zephyr be jealous of a little sister or brother? She loves everyone! Jenny, it makes my mouth water reading your menu for the weekend because it reminds me how delicious everything was--I won't tell you how much weight I gained over the weekend! The pear cake was my favorite dessert, though we devoured the pound cake you sent home in short order!
