Sweet Dreams, Peekaboo

In Memoriam:

Peekaboo

Dec. 18, 2006 to June 23, 2011

Darling ferret-boy, today you were reunited with your Precious on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.  We miss your sweet little face already, more than we can say.  We love you, and you will be with Precious in our hearts forever.  Until we meet again, sleep tight, little Peek-a-face.

Getting a Little Behind in My Work

I'm afraid I'm getting a little behind in my work because I'm just now posting pictures from Charis' afternoon yesterday. She's taking a nap now, so the ones from this morning are all there is for the moment.

While Didi dug post holes by hand yesterday, I picked arugula and Charis got into gardening.
It looks like SHE got a little behind in her work, too--or is that a little work on her behind?  :)
We don't have a jungle gym here, but Charis didn't miss it all all.
Hey, if the peas can climb the trellis . . .
. . . so can she!  :)
This morning Charis and Peekaboo played . . . what else, Peek-a-boo!

Who knew a ferret climbing into a box was doubled-over-laughing funny!
This horse goes pretty fast for an old guy, considering Mimi rode him when she was Charis' age!  Hey, Didi, I bet she'd love a REAL pony!
"Soupie go' ride."  That's what Charis said, and that's what Sophie did!

Ferreting Out Some Fun

Playing Seafarers of Catan made a nice change from watching TV on a hot, sultry Sunday afternoon when I felt too lazy to do the New York Times crossword puzzle.
And after both of Herb's guys whomped both of my guys, letting Peekaboo run amok over the game made a fun ending for everyone!

The Far Side of Zephyr Hill Farm

Over an inch of rain, thunderstorms and tornado warnings--so Angel and Brandy spent the day shut up safely in their stalls.  (SNAP!  There goes the umbilical cord, nice and tight again!)  After Angel finished her grain, I went to tell her good night over the side of the stall, still holding the grain scoop.  It took me a minute to realize why she was licking her chops: hope springs eternal in the equine breast!
When her lip-smacking didn't get her any more grain, she stretched out her nose like an elephant's trunk, twitching it toward the (empty) grain scoop.
Eye-rolling added to the nose twitching didn't get her any more grain, either--just chuckles from me!  Poor, starved animal!
Later I went into our room for something, and there was a large bump snaking its way across the bed.  Peekaboo must have gotten in while I had the animal gate down from the doorway to bring in the vacuum, and he climbed up the side of the bed to play under the bedspread.  "Where's the ferret?"  "Peek-a-boo!"

Who could ever be bored with such original animals?  :)

Fun and Games on the Farm

Charis spent the night last night and the day today.  What a fun day we had!  After Didi cooked bacon and eggs for breakfast (he didn't know Charis doesn't like eggs--or bacon, as it turns out), it was time to get dressed and go outside.  That was when we played our first game:
The "Peekaboo Hide 'n Seek the Shoes" game, trying to find Charis' shoes which Peekie had carried off.
We also learned Charis' new word which Jim taught her, "Shooss!
After Didi carried her while I led the horses down to the pasture, it was time for the next game:
The "Watch Charis March 0.2 Mile Uphill" game!  I wish I could bottle her energy and sell it--my fortune would be made!
Then it was time for the "Play With Aunt Kara" game, which involved digging in the garden, a nice long walk, and a wagon ride.
Next was the "How Fast Can Charis Pull Her Hat Off" game.  This was the only time I was quicker with the camera than she was to rip the hat off!  Good thing the sun went behind the clouds while we were out in the garden.
Zephyr wasn't quite as fast as Charis, mainly because she had to shake the hat off her head (not having hands to yank it off with!)  I managed to get three shots!
Then we played "Let's Fetch Eggs"--and we didn't break one!  This, by the way, was a four-egg day.  Gypsy is such a nice chicken--she actually held still for Charis to pat her.  Monique has taught her to be gentle, and she pats the animals very nicely.
Right before supper, she finally got into the "Gardening Game," although I think if we need grass actually dug up, we're going to have to ask Hero!
And when Jim and Monique got back, Charis played the "Look at the Fun Things I Learned to Do!" game.  I had helped her ride my old rocking horse, but when she showed Daddy and Mommy what she could do, it was so much more exciting!  We think she's just about ready to try out for the Olympic equestrian team!

One of the sweetest things, which I barely caught from the corner of my eye, was when we prayed before supper.  Charis actually put her hand in mine for the first time while we prayed to thank Jesus for her food.  As I said "Amen, thank you, Jesus!" I opened my eyes and saw that she had scrunched hers up tight during the prayer and didn't open them till I said "Amen!"  You'll just have to enjoy the mental picture.

Thank you, Jesus, for a beautiful day with our precious Charis!

Why I Love Ferrets

But first, thank you Jenny and Jean-Marc for doing Saturday evening chores!  The chickens penned up, Sara fed out in the back pasture, and the horses on their way up before we even got out to the barn!  What a nice surprise!  And after working hard in the garden all afternoon!  You guys are so sweet!

And now for some Saturday evening fun on the farm . . .  Can you tell what's wrong with this Kleenex box?

Go on, make a guess!

I knew you'd ferret out the answer if you tried hard enough!  Peekaboo invented a new game last night called "Saturday Night Kleenex Fight Club."  (Note the teeth marks in the plastic!)  Jean-Marc, I think we've discovered the next rage in video games.  You get several Kleenex boxes filled to different degrees with Kleenex and you have to see which one you can fit your ferret into, and then you see how many contortions you can make him do inside it in three minutes!  Whatcha think??

Sweet Thirteen (Months) and Already Been Kissed

Jenny and Jean-Marc cooked a marvelous gourmet meal last night for an early birthday celebration for Herb.  Actually, I should say they cooked it over the past day and a half!  Jim, Monique, Charis and Kara joined us.  We had two kinds of gourmet sausage, herbed olives, tzatziki with garlic pita chips, and bacon-wrapped dates for starters.  The salad course was a chunky gazpacho salad made by Monique.  That was followed by Jenny's pork posole, a Mexican stew made with hominy and a from-scratch concoction of two kinds of dried chile peppers.  It was served with onions, avocado, cilantro and lime garnishes.  Next came tossed green salad with home-made vinaigrette, followed by artisanal bread and French cheese.  We finished up with Jean-Marc's specialty:  dark chocolate mousse topped with white chocolate mousse topped with berry coulis.

Charis got to enjoy the food as her "second supper" before going to bed, and she kept asking for more.   But the highlight of her evening was playing with Peekaboo.  She was suddenly into Peekaboo kisses.  Waiting to be kissed . . .

Giving Peekaboo a kiss.

Peekaboo loves Charis kisses, too!

Charis touched my heart when she went to the ferret cage and kept asking for something, reaching for the covered hammock.  I showed her that Peekaboo was sitting in the cage, but she kept trying to look inside the hammock, asking for more.  I suddenly realized that she remembered Precious and was looking for her.  After all, her very first ferret kisses came from Precious!  See, Precious darling, you're remembered with love!

She's Back!

Charis, the biggest non-resident star of this blog, makes an appearance today, ever-enchanting in her many manifestations!
Charis uses sign language to ask for "more" of the millet couscous with vegetables (eggplant, zucchini, carrots, chick-peas and tomatoes) at lunch.
No, it's not a sexy pose--she's pushing back in an escaping piece of eggplant!
Hunger satisfied, she's rarin' to go--in fact, so much that she couldn't bear to waste time on a nap!
But she got one anyway when I offered to take her home for the evening so Jim and Monique could go to Bible study together.  Forty minutes is a loooong ride in a car seat when you've missed your nap!
We bundled her up, and Herb carried her out to watch me feed the animals.  Charis saw her first rodeo when Hero started chasing the horses, and they galloped three times around the field before Herb shut Hero up in the house so I could catch them.  Feeding the cats and chickens and gathering eggs was a lot tamer!  Charis squealed in delight when she saw Peekaboo's cage, so he came out and gave her kisses.  She pulled all of the dishes out of the play kitchen while I fixed dinner; then she devoured her beef stew with pumpkin, summer squash, onions and black beans, plus some guacamole.  But her favorite thing to do was play with Zephyr ("dah!").  Charis threw the big blue ball for Zephyr, and the rubber bone--after failing in her attempt to pry Zephyr's mouth open to stick the bone in!  It was a busy, fun evening, and Charis was sound asleep when daddy and mommy came to pick her up.  We'll put her to bed like this anytime!

Rockabye Peekaboo

Peekaboo has suddenly discovered my rocking chair (glider).  He jumps up on it, which makes it start to rock, and then he stretches, rolls and writhes all over the seat, keeping it moving.  He looks as if he is truly luxuriating!

Can you do this?

Keep your balance.

On a roll!

You gotta stay on your toes!

Soldiering On

The newspaper said today that the last day we saw the sun peek out of the clouds was Feb. 1.  That was the day I lost my Precious, and the days truly have been dark and gray since then.  It's as if there is a heavy pall over every day.  I still wake up with terrible visions of her, and I still cry for her every day.  I haven't felt at all like picking up my camera, but today I finally did it--more as an exercise of determination than in any spirit of delight.  My recompense follows.

The past two days I've taken the horses out to graze, but they are still full of pent-up energy.  With the thermometer at 24° this morning plus snow flurries and a freezing wind, I knew they'd be full of it.  If Brandy looks mean and crabby instead of exuberant, the next picture explains why.

Hero considers it his duty to chase the horses, barking wildly, if they run when I turn them loose.  Neither of them likes dogs anyway, and he is certainly no Canine Goodwill Ambassador!

This amazing frozen puddle was too intriguing to pass up.

And last, but not least, my sweet little Peekaboo.  He has had a thing about these books for quite awhile now, knocking them out of the bookcase every chance he has.  I have joked about his literary tastes, but when I looked at the photo fullscreen on my computer, I had to laugh.  When I quipped that he thinks he's a vampire, I had no idea how true that was!

Catching Up, Part II

Saturday, January 16

Jenny, Jean-Marc and I went to the mall, took in a movie, and got home about 8 p.m. to find Precious sitting under a comforter on my ottoman, apparently waiting for me.  She was very cold and limp and looked almost dead.  I wrapped her in a towel and put a heating pad on her all evening, then took her to bed like that.  Needless to say, I wasn't taking any pictures.

Sunday, January 17

Jenny took this picture of me and Precious, actually early Sunday morning before we went to bed.  After a night's sleep on the heating pad, with my hand holding her inside her towel all night long, she actually seemed a bit more alive this morning.  We stayed home from church while I nursed Precious and held her all day until the afternoon when she wanted to get in her cage.  Since she seemed to want to be in her hammock with Peekaboo, I figured he could be her heating pad!  She spent the rest of the afternoon and evening sleeping in there with him, only drinking if I gave her water, and not eating at all.

Monday, January 18

At one point yesterday afternoon when I let Precious down in the study with me, she climbed into the arm of the couch where the ferrets love to sleep.  I wanted her out so I could keep an eye on her, so I reached in to fish her out--but first I had to pull out Peekaboo's treasure trove (at left).  There was: one huarache, 3 foam paint brushes, one stuffed roadrunner, 40 promotional cards that were once wrapped in plastic until Peekaboo ate it, one unmentionable item, miscellaneous foam stuffing and plastic, and a 6-page promotional booklet about colon cleansing!  So now you know what stuff ferrets like!

Precious, by the way, is at the Mountain Hospital for Animals under the excellent care of Dr. Keller and team.  She's spending the night getting fluids and antibiotic treatment, trying to treat her acute ulcerative colitis.
