Still Loving the Snow!

The past two mornings we have had a beautiful lavender-pink sky above the blue of Lookout Mountain and the arctic white of the Back Pasture.  It reminds me of the old adage that begins, "Red sky at morning, sailors take warning."  There are no sailors around here, and the sky is pink instead of red, so we farmers have been going full steam ahead!  We have ridden in the hunting preserve (normally a no-man's land for horses during hunting season) every single one of the past five days.  Tire tracks in the snow warned Kara and me that the hunters will soon return, but the only one who braved the snow today had already left by the time we rode.  Knowing it might be our last ride in the snow this winter, we rode for an hour and a half.  We explored two enticing trails off of the main roads, following deer tracks and Hero.  Normally we would have been afraid of getting lost and being unable to find the road again, but like Hansel and Gretel, we just followed our own trail back!  Strangely enough, Brandy loves to go "bushwhacking" off in the woods.  Thanks to Kara, Angel rediscovered the joy of jumping and made a total of five jumps over trees blocking the road.  They were low enough to step over, but Kara has jumping in the blood--and Angel was happy to oblige.
By the time we finished riding at 4:30 p.m., the setting rays of the sun made beautiful periwinkle blue shadows across the snow.  As we prepared to eat supper, I happened to look out the back door to catch this beautiful sky.  It reminds me of the rest of the adage I quoted above, but paraphrased for farmers:  "Red sky at night, farmers delight!"
